When someone gives you their email in a DM, Ellipsend can add them to Flodesk and drop them into a segment a second later. It's one request. New to API requests? Start with Send Contact Info to Your Other Tools With API Requests.
Get Your Flodesk API Key
You need a paid Flodesk plan. API keys aren't available on a trial.
In Flodesk, open My account → Connections → API keys and click Create API key. Copy it and keep it handy for the next step.
Connect Flodesk to Ellipsend
In Ellipsend, go to Settings → Integrations → HTTP requests and click Add request. Name it Find Flodesk segments, pick Read · GET, and paste https://api.flodesk.com/v1/segments as the address.
Open Connection and click Add connection:
Connection name: Flodesk
Connection method: Username and password
Username: your Flodesk API key
Password: type
xApp addresses:
https://api.flodesk.com
Why the x? Flodesk asks for a username and password but expects the password to be blank. Ellipsend, like most software, won't save a username and password connection without a password. Flodesk only checks the key, so any password should work.
Save the connection and the request.
Find Your Segment's ID
Open the Testing tab and click Send test request. The response lists every segment with its ID. Flodesk needs the ID, not the name, so copy the one you want new contacts in.
Create the Request
Add a request named Add contact to Flodesk:
Destination: Create · POST,
https://api.flodesk.com/v1/subscribersConnection: Flodesk
Data to send: click Edit as JSON and paste this, with your segment ID in place of the placeholder
{"email": "{{ contact.email }}", "first_name": "{{ contact.first_name }}", "segment_ids": ["YOUR_SEGMENT_ID"]}
The parts in double curly braces, like {{ contact.email }}, are variables. When the request runs, Ellipsend swaps each one for that contact's real details, so paste them exactly as they are. To add a different detail, click inside the box where it should go, click Insert variable just above the box, and pick it from the list. More on variables.
Send a test request. A 200 means Flodesk accepted it. If the email is already in Flodesk, it's updated and added to the segment.
Sending to More Than One Segment?
One request sends to one segment. Most people put every DM lead in the same segment, so one request is all they need. If some automations should land contacts in a different segment, save one request per segment. Open Add contact to Flodesk, click More, then Duplicate request. Rename the copy after the segment, like Add contact to Flodesk · Meal Plan, swap in that segment's ID, and save.
Then pick the matching request in each automation. Your connection is shared, so you only enter your key once.
Add It to Your Automation
In your automation's DM steps, add Ask for Email, then Run API Request with Add contact to Flodesk, then the message that delivers your freebie. The message waits until Flodesk has the contact. You can run the same request from a saved response under After sending.
Good to Know
New subscribers are added without a confirmation email. If you want double opt-in, add
"double_optin": trueto the JSON.To put them in more than one segment, list several IDs:
["ID_1", "ID_2"].{{ contact.first_name }}is the first name on the contact's Instagram or Facebook profile, not an answer they typed.Check the Activity tab if someone doesn't show up in Flodesk. It shows what was sent and Flodesk's reply for every run.
