Find a Contact by What They Said

Search the inbox by message text, not only by name, and open the conversation you're looking for.

You remember the message but not the name. Someone asked about pricing last week, a contact mentioned a wedding in June, a lead said their last coach ghosted them. The inbox search now looks inside the conversations, so you can find a contact by what was said.

Search by Message

  1. Open the inbox and click into the search box at the top of the contact list.

  2. Type a word or phrase from the message, like "pricing" or "payment plan".

  3. The list updates on its own a moment after you stop typing. Press Enter or click the magnifying glass to run it right away.

Every contact whose conversation contains your phrase shows up in the list, and the count next to Contacts tells you how many matched. Open a contact and scroll to the message. Clear the box to get the full list back.

What the Search Looks At

The search checks the messages in the conversation along with the contact details it always searched: name, username, email, phone and country. So a search for "Nina" still finds Nina, and a search for "pricing" finds everyone who talked about pricing.

Save a Search as a Spotlight

A search is part of a Spotlight, the same as any filter. If you check every week on who asked about pricing, type the search, click the lightbulb and save it. Running a new search switches off whichever Spotlight was on, so the list never claims to be a saved view it no longer matches. See Setting Up Inbox Spotlights in the Inbox & Messaging guide for the steps.

In the App

Message search works the same way in the Ellipsend app for iOS and Android: open the inbox, tap the search box and type the phrase.
